Spoof Entry Could Win American Apparel Competition

These pictures have been circulating the net for a few days now and have been causing quite the storm. But the entrant shouldn't feel too disheartened that her pics are being met with this much controversy, because that's exactly what she intended when she took them.

To recap, American Apparel launched their "next big thing' competition to find a new plus sized model for its new XL collection. Girls who wanted to take part had to be around a US size 12-14 (that's 16-18 UK) and take pictures of their bodies, which would then be put to the public vote.

Nancy Upton, i.e. the girl in the pictures, was offended by the way in which American Apparel were going about it, so decided to make a 'spoof' entry. Her competition entry simply reads "I just can't stop eating". She's currently flicking between first and second place, so could well win the entire thing.

Nancy said of American Apparel's advert for the competition: "I immediately thought, based on the way it was written, 'Wow, they really have zero respect for plus-sized women. They’re going to line them up like cattle and make puns about them until they’re blue in the face.' And then, as corny as it sounds, it just occurred to me that based on their 'Hey, come on, fatties, we want you to play, too' tone, wouldn’t it be kind of brilliant to respond in a, 'Thanks for letting me play, just let me try put down the pizza, first' similar mocking tone."
